Many online users report Covenant Eyes is:

  • Inaccurate: Covenant Eyes’ software is notorious for flagging false positives of inappropriate content and reporting these to accountability partners. This causes unnecessary panic and can lead to strained relationships.
  • Buggy: Several users on Google Play Store report that Covenant Eyes can be buggy and it can quickly drain battery life or slow down your device.
  • Expensive: At $17 a month, Covenant Eyes is one of the more expensive accountability software in the market. For instance, Canopy is $10/month (billed monthly) for individuals and $12/month for duo—meaning you and your accountability partner.

If you’re facing similar issues with Covenant Eyes or you want a more comprehensive internet filter and accountability software, I’ve got you covered.

11 Best Covenant Eyes Alternatives in 2024 | Features & Pricing

Here’s a full deep dive of each app and how they work.

1. Canopy | Filters All Adult Content Without Blocking the Website

Canopy’s technology is both a porn blocker for adults and parental control app for families.

Built with AI, Canopy detects and removes all adult content on every website you use. You’ll still be able to browse the internet freely if you want, for example you can still shop online but lingerie models will be blocked out.

Canopy also has a whole host of smart features to keep you and your family safe online.

  • Website blocking: Set up which sites and apps to block access to or limit, and Canopy’s removal prevention will make sure they’re really blocked.
  • Sexting prevention: Receiving nude images is often unwanted, and sending them often leads to cyberbullying. Canopy will block sexts and notify parents immediately.
  • Location tracking: Know where your family is at all times and track them live.

Pricing:

Pricing starts at $7.99/mo for three devices. Grab a 7-day free trial here to get started.

Reviews:

This review sums up how Canopy excels over Covenant Eyes:

What’s more, Canopy works like a parental control app to keep kids safe—and in this case, to keep adults accountable.

The accountability partner, whether it’s a Sponsor, a guidance counselor, or a trusted friend, will be able to see which apps and websites their partner is using, block explicit websites and apps, and even restrict access to the Internet.

It also works cross-functionally, which means even if you have an Android and your accountability partner has an iPhone, they can still set and manage controls on their device.

Sarah from Family Tech also reviewed Canopy in this YouTube video:

And here’s what our users are saying:

So, how does Canopy compare to Covenant Eyes exactly?

Canopy vs. Covenant Eyes – Feature Comparison

Before we go into the details, here’s a quick feature comparison:

Canopy

Covenant Eyes

Real-time Content Filtering

Website and App Blocking

Sexting Prevention

Removal Prevention

Screen Time Limits

Location Tracking

We deep dive this topic on our Canopy vs. Covenant Eyes page here. But let’s look at some highlights below:

Feature 1: Real-time Content Filtering to Stay 100% Pure

Covenant Eyes is more of a screen monitoring app where it takes screenshots of your device and sends reports to your accountability partner.

It does offer a filtering system but it leaves much to be desired.

“Screenshots are not the end all be all. Filtering is crucial, and screenshots won’t matter if people have access to those sites in the first place,” says one frustrated Covenant Eyes user.

Covenant Eyes’ filtering system works in two ways:

  1. Blocking level: It blocks access to adult, pornographic, and explicit websites, and some mixed-content sites like Reddit.
  2. Custom websites: You can add custom URLs to block.

You can do both of these on Canopy, too. But just these blocks are not enough if you want to stay pure 100% of the time on the Internet.

You need to be able to shield against any unforeseen threats that might come your way as you’re browsing the web.

This is what we built Canopy for.

Canopy uses a Smart AI filter to scan and understand what kind of content is on every webpage you’re visiting. It then blocks out any explicit content that might be on that page before you can see it, while still allowing you to view other pieces of content on the page that are safe.

Canopy’s filter can detect and block partial nudity (e.g. a bikini image) all the way to full nudity, and everything in between.

This means:

✅ Users can still browse websites like Instagram and YouTube, but they won’t be able to see anything inappropriate.

✅ The AI filter scans content in real-time, not against databases or blacklists, so it’s more accurate and comprehensive.

✅ Even if a user hunts down secret websites or intentionally searches for something inappropriate, they won’t be able to see anything. Canopy automatically filters it out before it reaches their device. This also protects users from accidentally stumbling across explicit content while browsing the internet.

See how the Smart Filter works in real-life in this review from Family Tech.

Let’s look at an example.

Say you want to use Instagram for entertainment purposes or to stay in touch with friends. But you also want to make sure you don’t see anything explicit on there that would trigger a relapse.

With Canopy, you can block out all the explicit content before you see it, while still being able to use Instagram for other safe and clean reasons.

To prove how powerful Canopy’s filtering technology is, our team tried to “hack” it and search for explicit content, but it didn’t work. You can watch the full video below:

Feature 2: Website and App Blocking

Covenant Eyes allows you to block websites and custom URLs.

But Canopy goes a step further and allows you to block websites, custom URLs, installed apps on your device, and entire categories of content like:

  • Pornography
  • Social Media
  • Gambling

Blocking these categories means all the websites and installed apps under them will be blocked.

You can block any of your installed apps or all websites, and these are visible on the main dashboard of your Canopy app. You’ll just need to click on “Allowed” and then choose “Blocked”.

If you’d like to block custom URLs on Canopy, you can add the URL into the app and choose “Blocked”.

Feature 3: Easy Usage Monitoring

You can use Canopy in two main ways:

  1. With an accountability partner to help you on your journey to safer internet usage.
  2. On your own, where the app itself becomes your accountability partner.

Whichever option you choose, Canopy monitors all Internet browsing (including images, text, videos, and URLs), all photos taken on or downloaded on your Android, and most photos taken on or downloaded on your iPhone.

Canopy also tracks the apps you use and how long you used it for. You or your accountability partner can see this Screen Time Report right on the main dashboard.

This is not only great for keeping you accountable, but also for tracking where your screen time is going and how you can reduce it.

If you’re using Canopy for a child, make sure to closely track which app they’re spending the most time on.

For instance, if they’re spending a lot of time on a “calculator” or a “note” app, you might want to dig a little deeper into what exactly they’re doing in there. It might be a front for something malicious underneath.

Feature 4: Sexting Prevention

Sexting can lead to disastrous consequences like sextortion, legal penalties, and even being placed on the sex offender register. (Learn more about the dangers of sexting.)

Canopy prevents sexting by sending immediate alerts when the protected device receives a risky photo or when it tries to send one to another party.

Then, the accountability partner or the parent will need to approve that image before the protected person can see it or send it to someone else.

This is the ultimate approach to staying accountable as you won’t be able to receive any triggering images from anyone.

Try Canopy for free here.

This Sexting Prevention feature works differently on Android and iOS.

  • On Android, Canopy detects when an inappropriate image is taken. Then, a pop-up appears asking if the kid wants to send this picture to their parents to approve it or just delete it. Canopy doesn’t wait until the picture is sent to somebody else; it takes action at the root before it’s too late.
  • On iPhone, the image will only be detected when the image is saved to the phone, although Canopy offers a workaround that parents can set up. This is because Apple has stricter restrictions on what third-party apps can do on the device.

Feature 5: Removal Prevention

Covenant Eyes scans websites and filters out inappropriate content, but you can easily disable this feature on browsers like Safari or Chrome.

But Canopy comes with built-in settings on Android and iPhone that prevent users from disabling or uninstalling it.

  • On Android, you can’t remove Canopy without your accountability partner’s approval.
  • On an iPhone, you can remove the app, but your accountability partner will be notified whenever this happens. But, Canopy offers a workaround for this that you can set up.

Feature 6: Screen Time Limits

Canopy isn’t just for blocking porn but also for managing your screen time.

You or your accountability partner can set Internet Down Times at specific time periods, such as during dinner or 1 hour before bed.

During this Down Time, you won’t be able to access the internet on your protected devices. But calls and texts will still work like normal.

You can name these downtimes anything you want, select the days of the week it will take place and set whatever start and end time you want.

These Down Times help you spend quality time with your family and stick to your recovery journey.

How to Install Canopy

If you’re ready to try out Canopy, here’s how the installation process works:

  1. Create an account and start a 7-day free trial.
  2. Download the Canopy App on your accountability partner’s device where they’ll set controls. This is fairly easy and they can do it in a minute.
  3. Install the Canopy Shield App on the device you want to protect. This is where it can get a bit complicated depending on what kind of device you have and how many devices you want to install it on. Here are some instruction guidelines to help:
    1. Canopy Shield Android Installation
    2. Canopy Shield iPhone / iPad Installation
    3. Canopy Shield – Mac Installation
    4. Canopy Shield – Windows Installation

Sarah from Family Tech also talks about the installation process in depth here.

Device Compatibility

Canopy is compatible with all modern devices, including:

  • Android devices (smartphones and tablets) running Android 5.0 or higher
  • iPhones and iPads running iOS 12 or higher
  • Apple computers running a recent version of MacOS
  • Any computer running a recent version of Windows OS
  • Chromebooks running Chrome OS

You can use any combination of devices with Canopy as long as they both meet those specifications.

For example, if you have an Android but your child has an iPhone, that’s totally fine!

Pros and Cons

Probably the best thing about Canopy is that users can keep themselves safe online while also protecting their independence and privacy.

Privacy is particularly important for adults and your accountability partner doesn’t need to know every single thing you Google when they know for a fact that no inappropriate content (not even partial nudity) will come up, no matter what.

According to Play Store reviews, users love how Canopy blocks inappropriate content before getting to their devices, compared to other apps which just alerts whenever inappropriate content comes up.

Users also praise Canopy’s customer service team for their responsiveness and speed at resolving issues.

Canopy also works well with other additional layers of protection, like the Google Family Link app.

But because of the granular level of protection Canopy offers, it can take a while to properly set it up, especially if you want to protect multiple devices and device types. Our customer service reps are always a call or an email away to help you through it!

Pricing

  • 7-day free trial

2. Trustablee

Play Store Rating: 4.7 out of 5

App Store Rating: Not available

If you’re looking for a screen accountability software alternative to Covenant Eyes, Trustablee is a good choice.

It monitors your online activities, takes random screenshots during the day, and sends reports to your trusted “buddy. This includes:

  1. Links monitoring: Trustable monitors all the website links that you visit and reports them to your buddy.
  2. On-screen text monitoring: Keywords that appear on your screen is scanned for suspicious content
  3. Screenshot monitoring: The app takes screenshots of conversations or anything that you’re looking at on your screen.

The buddy will be able to view these activity reports on Trustablee’s Buddy Dashboard.

I like that these reports are so simple and the dashboard is easy to navigate. Being an accountability partner can be a big challenge and getting concise information in an easy-to-read format is invaluable. The buddy will also be notified whenever something suspicious is detected.

For privacy reasons, Trustable only shares these reports on their dashboard, rather than through emails.

Another cool thing Trustablee does is remind users of why they are changing their behavior and what they can do to crush urges when they arise.

However, Trustablee is merely a monitoring tool—it doesn’t allow you to block explicit websites or apps or filter out inappropriate content in real-time, like Canopy does.

Key Features

  • Daily accountability reports: Detailed daily summaries of online activity are sent to an accountability partner.
  • Comprehensive monitoring: Tracks links, on-screen text, and takes screenshots.
  • Real-time alerts: Immediate notifications are sent for any suspicious or concerning activity.
  • Sensitivity levels: Users can adjust monitoring sensitivity based on their needs.
  • Limited role buddies: This feature allows buddies to only see suspicious activity, preserving user privacy and focusing on relevant information.
  • Incognito browsing reporting: Monitors activity even in private browsing modes.
  • Automatic streak counter: Tracks the number of days without incidents to encourage positive behavior.

Device Compatibility

  • Android
  • PC

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Provides comprehensive reports on browsing activity.
  • Strong privacy controls ensure user data is protected.
  • Encourages positive behavior through accountability partnerships.

Cons:

  • Can be seen as invasive due to detailed activity tracking.
  • Only works for Android – not for iOS
  • Limited to monitoring and reporting, without blocking capabilities.

Pricing

  • $4.99 per month
  • $49.99 per year

3. Truple

Play Store Rating: 4.5 out of 5

App Store Rating: Not available

 Store Rating: Not available

Truple is a similar screen accountability software like Covenant Eyes and Trustablee.

It monitors web browsing, apps used, text, and images, randomly takes screenshots at any time of the day, and sends these screenshots to the accountability partner through daily or weekly emails.

This way, you or your partner’s online behavior is transparent, making it harder to slip into old habits without someone noticing.

Users can also track web browsing history in chronological order, with high-risk sites being flagged in red. Truple also sends real-time alerts if this feature is turned on.

But the most unique feature of Truple is “image blurring and text redaction”, which covers up regular images and texts that are not explicit. This is great if you’re using Truple for your child and you don’t want to invade their privacy too much while still keeping an eye on their online activity.

Key Features

  • Real-time Screenshots: Capture periodic screenshots of your device activity to ensure continuous monitoring.
  • Secure Sharing: Share screenshots securely with your accountability partner to maintain privacy and trust.
  • Customizable Frequency: Adjust how often screenshots are taken to fit your monitoring needs.
  • Image Blurring and Text Redaction: Maintain privacy and protect accountability partners from graphic details.
  • Activity Reports: Generate detailed activity reports to track progress and identify patterns in behavior.
  • Real-time Notifications: Receive instant notifications about unusual or concerning activity to stay proactive.

Device Compatibility

  • Android 5+
  • Windows 7-11
  • Linux
  • Chrome
  • Kindle Fire
  • Mac OS
  • iPhone and iPad: (Works far better on Android devices than on iOS. Web history and filtering are the only features available on iOS.)

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Balances transparency with privacy.
  • Encourages open communication with an accountability partner.
  • Easy to set up and use.

Cons:

  • May feel intrusive due to constant monitoring.
  • Important features like screenshots, image blurring, text redaction, and smart capture not available on iOS.
  • Lacks additional features like app or website blocking.

Pricing

  • $160 / year
  • $16 / month

4. Relay

Play Store Rating: Not available

App Store Rating: Not available

Relay is a group-based support software for individuals struggling with porn and sexual addiction.

Most of the time these individuals struggle to seek help due to the shame and stigma around their issue, but Relay helps them find and connect with others who share similar experiences.

It goes beyond surface-level solutions by guiding individuals through personalized plans to uncover and address the underlying emotional triggers of their addiction.

For instance, they can easily record and share their progress, challenges, and experiences, and use advanced analytics to identify patterns and prevent relapses before they happen.

What I like best about Relay is that it creates a “We’re in this together” type of community where everyone works together and keeps each other accountable. Overcoming addiction is mentally and physically tough, but doing it in a supportive group can ease the process.

It’s also great that individuals can stay anonymous, while still receiving genuine, shame-free support from a group of peers.

Key Features

  • Integrated Team Support: Connect with others facing similar struggles to gain group-based support and break free from isolation.
  • Personalized Reflections: Dive into personalized reflections to understand and address the emotional triggers behind addiction.
  • Progress Recording and Sharing: Easily document r progress, challenges, and experiences to share with the support team.
  • Analyze Patterns: Use analytics to pinpoint patterns and trends, helping users identify and prevent potential relapses.
  • Craft Personalized Plans: Receive a tailored recovery plan based on a user’s unique situation for a more effective approach.
  • Feedback Loop: Get continuous feedback to adapt and improve the recovery plan as progress is made.

Device Compatibility

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Offers group-based support to reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Personalized plans make it easier to overcome addiction rather than a one-size approach.
  • 24/7 accessibility ensures constant support and monitoring.

Cons:

  • Reliance on group support may not suit those preferring private recovery methods.
  • Continuous self-monitoring and reflection can be time-consuming.
  • Effectiveness depends on user engagement and willingness to share progress.

Pricing

  • Full program access: $149/year

5. Fortify

Play Store Rating: 3.8 out of 5

App Store Rating: 4.8 out of 5

Fortify is a similar group-support software like Relay in which individuals can get personalized plans, resources, and chat with others who are facing the same issues.

But Fortify goes a step further and offers one-on-one coaching support from a recovery expert, as well as text-based Q and A sessions. This means individuals get immediate, tailored guidance whenever they need it.

The app’s gamification features, such as rewards and badges, also make it more engaging, helping users stay motivated and committed.

I also like that users can access guided meditations to help them learn how to work through difficult emotions and stay accountable during moments of weaknesses.

But the thing about both Fortify and Relay is that they are great for those who are already motivated to stay accountable. Without self-commitment, these apps won’t be very effective since they don’t rely on external accountability.

Key Features

  • Interactive Lessons: Learn creative strategies and practical skills with comprehensive training sessions and expert Q&A.
  • Daily Tracking: Discover patterns in recovery data through detailed tracking of daily activities and moods.
  • Community Support: Connect with a global community for support and encouragement from others facing similar challenges.
  • Personalized Insights: Receive real-time statistics and tailored recommendations based on individual progress and needs.
  • Digital Coaching: Access one-on-one support from recovery experts for additional guidance and encouragement.
  • Guided Meditations: Use mindfulness practices to work through difficult emotions and respond calmly in challenging moments.
  • Private Journal: Record personal thoughts and experiences in a secure, private journal to reflect on the recovery journey.
  • S.O.S. Support: Reach out for immediate guidance and encouragement during challenging times.

Device Compatibility

  • iOS
  • Android
  • Web Browsers

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Effective online training lessons, according to app users.
  • Clean and intuitive interface.
  • Fosters a supportive community for motivation and shared progress.

Cons:

  • Relies heavily on user self-motivation and commitment.
  • Lacks structured external accountability and oversight.
  • Gamification features hidden within the app, making them difficult to access.

Pricing

  • Free plan with basic features
  • $12/month

6. Accountable2You

Play Store Rating: 4.1 out of 5

App Store Rating: 3.8 out of 5

Accountable2You is a well-known Covenant Eyes alternative. In fact, the two apps are very similar.

Accountable2You monitors internet browsing, app usage, device activity, and provides detailed reports and instant alerts to accountability partners.

The app’s monitoring capabilities are quite impressive. It keeps an eye on everything in the background, even incognito mode, and immediately alerts your accountability partners if something questionable pops up.

Also, Accountable2You’s reports are extremely detailed, showing which web pages or apps were viewed, what activity occurred on these pages and apps, and what level of threat it was.

Accountability partners can also customize trigger words and set the sensitivity for each device, making the monitoring as personalized as they need.

However, this manual approach has its drawbacks, as it’s impossible to cover every type of inappropriate content or word. You might miss some, or it would just be very time-consuming to manually enter everything.

In contrast, Canopy automatically filters out any and every inappropriate image and content without you having to manually set controls.

It also does it in real-time—not by checking websites and images against databases or blacklists. Instead, Canopy’s Smart AI scans and understands the content of a page and decides which is appropriate (OK to show) and which isn’t (blocked). This is a more comprehensive approach to achieving online purity.

Key Features

  • Detailed Monitoring: Tracks internet browsing, app usage, and device activity, including incognito mode, and provides detailed reports to accountability partners.
  • Instant Alerts: Sends immediate alerts via text and email for any questionable activity.
  • Advanced Customization: Allows users to add custom trigger words and adjust monitoring sensitivity for each device.
  • Real-Time Reports: Offers real-time access to activity reports.
  • Circumvention Alerts: Monitors and reports attempts to uninstall or tamper with the software.

Device Compatibility

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • Android
  • iOS (iPhone)
  • Chromebook
  • Linux

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Light app, which doesn’t slow down devices or drain battery.
  • Affordable pricing.
  • Works especially well with Android devices.

Cons:

  • No reports available on the app, only on the website.
  • Too easy to uninstall without the accountability partner’s approval.
  • The real-time alert function often doesn’t work as intended.

Pricing

  • Free 10-day trial
  • Personal: $9/month
  • Family: $14/month
  • Group plans: From $20 to $50/month

7. AirDroid

Play Store Rating: 4.4 out of 5

App Store Rating: 4.7 out of 5

AirDroid is a parental control app, but it can also be used to block porn and stay accountable. With it, your accountability partner can monitor your online and offline activities to the fullest extent.

For example, your accountability partner can mirror your screen and see what sites or apps you’re currently using, who you’re chatting with, and what you’re chatting about.

The app also syncs the notifications on your Android phone with your partner’s. This means that they will get the same app and phone notifications that you do.

But AirDroid’s most striking feature is the “Remote Camera” where your partner can remotely turn on your rear or front camera no matter where you are.

The app also comes with a microphone that picks up surrounding noise. When necessary, your partner can even record voices from your side for future use.

To be fair, I think Airdroid is too much of an invasive app for adults, and it’s more suitable for parents who are concerned for their children.

Key Features

  • Today’s Events: View daily and weekly device usage statistics, including hours of use, app usage time charts, notification counts, and traffic usage statistics.
  • Remote Microphone and Camera Access: Access and monitor surroundings via an Android device’s microphone and camera.
  • Screen Mirroring: Display the current screen content of a device.
  • Alerts: Receive notifications on the main dashboard when set limits are violated.
  • Sync App Notifications: Get real-time notifications that mirror those on the device.
  • Screen Time Limits: Set time limits for specific apps (e.g., 30 mins a day for Instagram) or for total screen usage (e.g., 2 hours a day).
  • Location Tracking: Monitor the real-time location and review the location history of a device.

Device Compatibility

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Windows
  • MacOS

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • The most extensive monitoring features available, much more than Covenant Eyes.
  • Real-time alerts when screen time limits are exceeded.
  • Tracks detailed statistics on device and app usage.

Cons:

  • Users report that screen mirroring features don’t work well as intended.
  • The software can be buggy at times.
  • Does not proactively prevent sexting. It just notifies the partner whenever a suspicious text comes in.

Pricing

  • 3-day free trial
  • Monthly Plan: $9.99 per month
  • Quarterly Plan: $19.99 per quarter
  • Yearly Plan: $59.99 per year

8. Net Nanny

Play Store Rating: 2.2 out of 5

App Store Rating: 2.7 out of 5

Having been around 1996, Net Nanny is one of the most long-standing parental control apps and porn blocker on my list.

Similar to Canopy, Net Nanny’s filter not only blocks explicit content, including pornography, but also actively analyzes web pages in real-time. This makes sure you’re shielded from inappropriate material continuously.

The app also shows detailed online activity on its Family Feed and sends alerts to the accountability partner when inappropriate websites or apps are viewed.

However, Net Nanny is a bit pricier than most others on our list, and it doesn’t offer a free trial. It also seems to have gone downhill since 1996, based on reviews online.

Key Features

  • Internet Filtering: Analyzes and blocks inappropriate content in real-time, ensuring safe browsing across various websites.
  • Screen Time Management: Allows setting specific times of the day or total hours when the internet can be accessed, helping manage daily internet use.
  • App Blocking: Enables blocking access to specific apps, tailoring usage to ensure safety and appropriateness.
  • Location Tracking: Provides real-time location updates, offering peace of mind about users’ whereabouts.
  • Alerts and Reporting: Receive notifications and detailed reports on online activities, helping stay informed and react when necessary.
  • YouTube Monitoring: Monitors the videos watched on YouTube, including details like video names and viewing times.
  • Social Media Protection: Safeguards users from potential risks on social platforms by monitoring activity across networks like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Pornography Blocking: Specifically designed to prevent exposure to adult content, ensuring users do not encounter inappropriate material.

Device Compatibility

  • Android devices (Android 6.0 or higher)
  • iOS devices (iOS 12.1 or higher)
  • MacOS computers
  • Windows
  • Chromebook (Chrome OS devices)
  • Amazon Fire tablets

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Advanced AI filtering technology.
  • Detailed screen usage reports.
  • Strong YouTube monitoring.

Cons:

  • The app is very difficult to install.
  • Key features like web filtering rarely work as intended.
  • No trial available and more expensive than other tools in the market.

Pricing

  • No free trial
  • 1 Desktop: $39.99 / year billed annually
  • 5 Devices: $54.99 / year billed annually
  • 20 Devices: $89.99 / year billed annually

9. FamiSafe

Play Store Rating: 2.7 out of 5

App Store Rating: 4.2 out of 5

FamiSafe is a great parental control and porn blocking app, offering a strong set of features for keeping children, teens, and adults safe in the digital age.

Here are some unique ones:

  • Got a teen who just started driving? Famisafe monitors their driving habits and alerts you to risky driving.
  • Reverse location tracking: It helps your kids find out where you are if they need you quickly.
  • Famibot: Ask their AI chatbot how to educate your kids about important safety topics.

It recently launched a “Screen Viewer” function where users can take screenshots of protected devices instantly or on a timed schedule (every 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes).

FamiSafe also scans for inappropriate images and alerts accountability partners whenever it detects something suspicious. And these suspicious images will be displayed to the partner in the form of a gallery. This function works for texts as well.

You can also block porn and dating apps on FamiSafe, and even block certain search terms.

Key Features

  • Activity Report: Tracks device usage and app activity.
  • App Blocker & Usage: Limits access to apps and monitors how they’re used.
  • Screen Time: Sets limits on daily device use.
  • Web Filtering: Blocks or allows websites based on content suitability.
  • Location Tracking & Geo-Fencing: Monitors real-time location and sets boundaries.
  • Explicit Content Detection: Alerts parents to potentially harmful content on social apps.
  • YouTube Monitoring: Monitors watched YouTube videos and video search history.
  • Drive Safety: Analyzes driving behavior for teenagers.

Device Compatibility

  • iOS
  • Android
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Kindle Fire Devices
  • Chrome OS

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Tracks a wide range of activities including social media and location.
  • Allows detailed customization of web, screen time, and app usage rules.
  • Quick alerts for any inappropriate content or boundary violations.

Cons:

  • Famisafe’s Safe Search Filter needs some tweaking. While it does ban certain words, there are others—including some linked to drugs and violent behavior—that can still be searched.
  • Drains battery of the protected devices.
  • Complex interface that requires a steep learning curve.

Pricing

Famisafe offers three different plan options:

  • $9.99 per month for up to 5 devices
  • $19.99 per quarter for up to 10 devices
  • $59.99 per year for up to 10 devices

10. Qustodio

Play Store Rating: 3.9 out of 5

App Store Rating: 4.3 out of 5

On Qustodio, accountability partners or parents can monitor their partner’s or child’s online activity, including which websites they visit and which apps they use.

It also has a unique web filter that automatically blocks harmful websites while opening access to “child-friendly” ones. Plus, it adapts to new threats as they appear, which is super handy. You can also manually block inappropriate apps, games, and websites.

But what I like best about Qustodio is the detailed reports and alerts that the accountability partner or parents get. They’ll be able to see the full digital activity, browsing history, YouTube views, screen time, and more.

Another unique thing is that Qustodio allows you to block not just websites and apps but also games with inappropriate content.

On the downside, Qustodio doesn’t offer a free trial, and it’s a lot pricier than some other options. It also does not prevent sexting or send alerts when inappropriate images are taken or sent.

11. OurPact

Play Store Rating: 2.7 out of 5

App Store Rating: 4.4 out of 5

Rating: 4.4 out of 5

OurPact is more of a parental control and family locator app but it also offers very similar monitoring features to Covenant Eyes.

For instance, your accountability partner will be able to take automatic screenshots of your device, block explicit websites and apps, and track your location.

But one unique thing OurPact does is block text messages. It’s the only app where you can block iMessage on iOS. On Android, you can set more comprehensive controls like blocking text messages based on automated schedules or within a set period of time (e.g. dinner time).

It’s also cross-platform (like Canopy), meaning you can manage devices across different operating systems seamlessly.

Key Features

  • Manages Screen Time: Sets daily screen time limits, schedules device-free periods, and controls instant access to apps and websites.
  • Blocks Apps: Allows blocking of specific apps, such as social media, games, or other distractions, managing accessibility as needed.
  • Filters Web Content: Includes a robust web filter that blocks inappropriate and harmful websites, customizable to fit specific safety criteria.
  • Tracks Locations: Provides real-time location tracking and peace of mind by monitoring movements. Geofences can be set to alert when specific locations like school or home are entered or exited.
  • Monitors Texts and Apps: Offers insights into app usage and interactions, ensuring safe communication and app activities.
  • Implements Allowance & Rewards: Sets screen time allowances and rewards additional screen time for positive behavior or completed tasks.
  • Customizes Schedules: Creates tailored schedules for various times of the day or week, like allowing only educational apps during school hours or turning off the device at bedtime.

Device Compatibility

  • iOS 9.3 or later
  • Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Easy to use interface.
  • Reliable family locator feature with geofencing.
  • Comprehensive text message blocking.

Cons

  • The free version offers restricted features, pushing users towards the premium subscription with more features, but users report they don’t work very well.
  • Users report occasional glitches and performance issues.
  • Is not compatible with Windows or MacOS.

Pricing

  • 14-day free trial
  • Premium: $6.99/month
  • Premium+: $9.99/month

Covenant Eyes Alternatives – FAQs

As of June 2024, Covenant Eyes cost $17 per month or $187 per year.

This is steeper than most porn blockers and accountability software in the market. In comparison, Canopy costs $10-$12 per month, with full filtering and blocking features.

Covenant Eyes came under immense controversy when Google removed the app from Play Store in September 2021.

This was largely due to an investigative article published on WIRED that claimed Covenant Eyes was misusing Google’s accessibility features to “spy” on users.

When the team at WIRED downloaded and tested Covenant Eyes, they found it was able to collect, monitor, and report all sorts of “innocent behavior”, apart from pornography-related activities.

The article claimed Covenant Eyes exploited Android’s accessibility permissions to be able to monitor almost everything someone does on their phone, including Amazon purchases, articles users read, search terms, and even which friends’ accounts they looked at on Instagram.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“While the accessibility functionalities are meant to help developers build out features that assist people with disabilities, these apps take advantage of such permissions to either capture screenshots of everything actively being viewed on the device or detect the name of apps as they’re being used and record every website visited in the device’s browser.”

You can read the entire article here.

Covenant Eyes later published an article responding to this controversy and said they did not violate Google’s accessibility policy and they do not know the true reason why Google took down the app temporarily.

As of now, Covenant Eyes is available on Google Play Store.
